French and Francophone Studies Mentorship Program
The French and Francophone Studies Mentorship Program allows students to explore career possibilities and to participate in a supportive network that encourages and improves French language skills. It provides students who would like additional practice or assistance with a Mentor ( an advance French student) who can tutor them. This program also includes and encourages French conversation, weekly meetings, and program sponsored events.
UF Language Lab Tutoring
Once a week, I tutor at the UF Language Lab and I offer assistance to anyone who is trying to learn and improve their French. Tutoring is highly beneficial because I learn more as I teach others more. It helps my language learning as well.
Peace Corps Prep Program
The Peace Corps Prep Program(PCP) prepares students for international field work and potential Peace Corps service. This program requires three sector specific classes and 50 hours of hands on experience in that sector. I am interested in teaching English as a second language in the Education sector in the Peace Corps. Therefore, I pursued a TESL certificate which consists of sector related classes and a teaching internship. I gained my 50 hours of hands on experience through the TESL internship and by volunteering as a conversation partner in the ELI (English Language Institute) Conversation Partner Program.
Teaching Languages
This course is designed to provide instructional support and professional mentoring for novice L2 teachers during their TESL internship experience. Throughout the internship, I had the opportunities to:
-
learn about and participate in instructional activities of experienced ESL teachers,
-
design, in collaboration with others, a course appropriate for Visiting Scholars,
-
create and teach appropriate instructional activities and materials for your course,
-
assess my ability to teach lesson content while effectively managing the learning environment,
-
develop and/or implement appropriate assessment measures to evaluate student learning and achievement,
-
work collaboratively with fellow interns and the internship supervisor as I plan and carry out their internship responsibilities, and
-
reflect on and learn about my own professional development as an L2 teacher
UF ELI Conversation Partner Program
The ELI Conversation Partner Program consists of student volunteers from the University of Florida (UF) who set aside an hour/week or more in order to meet with ELI students (these are international students who are enrolled in the English Language Institute and are learning English at UF). During that time, the volunteers and ELI students practice having casual English conversation. My conversation partner was named Jason. Jason was from Korea and English was his second language. We met once a week and I would help him with definitions, pronunciations, grammar, and more during our conversations. We would meet at restaurants sometimes and Jason picked out a great local Korean restaurant so I could try some of his country's delicious food!
